So you have decided to turn your musty junk-filled basement into a warm liveable space. Based on what you are describing, it is most likely the basement you are considering would not count as finished square footage. There’s no point looking at lots of basement ideas if it would actually be structurally impossible to install a basement room.
Doing a whole floor may be expensive, but if you have a small basement bathroom or area behind a bar it could be do-able. Devote one end of your basement to general storage by hiding that area with a floor-to-ceiling wall covering in the same color as the surrounding walls.
Serious master suites now sport completely separate spaces for couples to get ready, expansive designer closets, separate shoe closets, and lounge areas for unwinding at the end of the day. During the summer the basement is cold enough, and many find it a place to get away from the unbearable heat and enjoy a cool drink, that there will not only keep warm. I know sewing and craft room are not the same, but the ideas can be incorporated into any room or space. Your chosen contractors will then need to underpin foundations for support, completely waterproof the basement and build in the internal walls. Basement areas are generally not comfortable for a longer stay because they have no natural light, and often they occur and moisture problems in older buildings. A real office with plenty of space, high speed internet, and quiet, is a must, and the basement is the ideal space to accomplish this. Your basement can even be transformed into the ultimate music room or recording studio.
Do not be bound so much by functionality and practicality that you forget about making the basement a fun place to be in. While playing it safe with the rooms above is understandable, let the space below be your own personal canvas. Ethnic cooking tends to focus on meals you can feed a large family for cheap (ie: rice, beans, soups, etc).
